After a preparatory talk with the organizing professor Dr. Robert Roth we used TURM&#8217;s four telescopes to observe the sun&#8217;s activity on 26th of April 2021. What we saw were quite some sunspots in the center of the sun, some Plage all around the sun disc and coronal loops at different angles on the edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 37%\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"706\" height=\"754\" src=\"https:\/\/turm.physik.tu-darmstadt.de\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Rotationsperiode_3D_1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2082 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/turm.physik.tu-darmstadt.de\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Rotationsperiode_3D_1.png 706w, https:\/\/turm.physik.tu-darmstadt.de\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Rotationsperiode_3D_1-570x609.png 570w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>With the help of photos taken on previous days (which can be found in TURM&#8217;s archive), the movement of the sunspots and thus of the sun\u2019s surface becomes clear. By extracting the 2d coordinates of one major sunspot over time and converting them into 3d, we were capable of finding the corresponding plane of movement. Within this plane a circle was fitted. Using its radius, the latitude \u03c6 of the sunspot could be estimated to \u03c6 = (16,24 \u00b1 2,04)\u00b0. With the help of the circle\u2019s circumference, the sideric rotation period at this particular latitude could also be calculated and yielded (25,66 \u00b1 0,28) days. In the following picture, one can identify a coronal loop formed by a tremendous stream of plasma that, due to its charge, follows the magnetic field lines.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:34% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"968\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/turm.physik.tu-darmstadt.de\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sun_had_col_2021-04-26_09-38-42.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2088 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/turm.physik.tu-darmstadt.de\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sun_had_col_2021-04-26_09-38-42.jpg 968w, https:\/\/turm.physik.tu-darmstadt.de\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sun_had_col_2021-04-26_09-38-42-570x358.jpg 570w, https:\/\/turm.physik.tu-darmstadt.de\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sun_had_col_2021-04-26_09-38-42-768x482.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 968px) 100vw, 968px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Additionally, a detailed photo of the group of sunspots that has been used to determine the surface\u2019s rotation period was taken. The bright spots close to some sunspots are called Plage and indicate a concentration of magnetic fields whose influence also determines the structure of the Granules close to the sunspot.
