TURM: The Making of…

The design, construction, and installation of the TURM Observatory on top of the historic Uhrturm was an exciting adventure in itself. Because of the limited space on the platform on top of the Uhrturm we went for the smallest possible dome, a fully automated ScopeDome 2m model. The dome was fully assembled and moved by crane to the the platform right after the glass walls surrounding the platform were put in place.

Everything happened on a single day in November 2019. Below are a few impressions of the installation of the glass walls and the dome. Thanks to Felix Heinemann from the Hochschuldidaktische Arbeitsstelle of the TU for these drone images.

And a little drone movie of the observatory dome being lifted to the top of the Uhrturm and put in place between the temporary support structure for the glas walls.

After the dome was installed on the platform we had to wait for the completion of the glass cuboid and the roof as well as the electrical installation, which took a little while due to the winter weather. We are now busy installing the telescopes and electronics in the dome… stay tuned.
