The night sky is an absolutely fascinating sight… thousands of stars sprinkled across a pitch-black sky with the Milky Way shining down on you… Well, the sky viewed from downtown Darmstadt is nothing like this. Light pollution, i.e., the artificial city light that is scattered in the atmosphere and brightens the sky background, often limits our visual experience of the night sky to a few dull stars. Not impressive at all.
There are two ways to get around this problem: You can look for a remote place where it is still sufficiently dark and put a telescope there. Or you use special observational techniques that are less affected by light pollution. We do both.
